Making Irish Connections in
Canton
The 15th annual
festival is a celebration of the region's largest ethnic
community. The popular festival, which last year drew nearly
30,000 people, is hosted by the
Irish
Cultural Centre of New England at its 46 acre campus
just 10 miles south of Boston.
This year's Festival features
on-stage performances by leading Irish musicians and dancers,
readings by noted authors, workshops on genealogy, step dancing
and the Irish language, a poetry contest, and athletic
competitions sponsored by the Gaelic
Athletic Association.
New to the festival this year: A facsimile Irish Cottage from
the film classic The Quiet Man starring John Wayne and Maureen
O'Hara has been constructed on festival grounds by Irish
craftsmen. A group of Irish Wolfhounds - the official dog of
Ireland - will be at the festival to display their great beauty
and stature.
Among the most popular
Festival attractions from past years: a marketplace of
85 vendors selling authentic Irish products; a children's
village offering carnival rides, sidewalk art, and a petting
zoo; and a Ceili Tent
featuring continuous Irish set dancing throughout the weekend by
hundreds of skilled dancers.
In addition to cultural activities, the
Irish Connections Festival includes a variety of Irish and
American food courts, pubs with traditional Irish music
sessions, and an Irish Tea Room where the annual Irish bread
baking contest takes place. The three-day event is considered the premier summer event for New England's Irish community.
Local residents and visitors,
families and friends, Irish and non-Irish alike are all welcome.

The Centre promotes Irish culture, arts, and sporting events year round, and offers its members a vibrant connection to Ireland and Irish heritage.
